Serbia is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. The city of Belgrade, capital of the Republic of Serbia, lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Danube and the Sava. The population in Serbia in around 7.2 million people (July 2011 est.) of which 1.6 million live in Belgrade.

The Serbian Rowing Federation is the successor of the former Yugoslav Rowing Federation which was founded on the 13th August 1922 in Ljubljana. The Yugoslav Rowing Federation first took part in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. In 1996 the former Yugoslav Rowing Federation and Serbian Federation unified. In 2003 the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ceased to exist and the rowing federation changed its name to the Rowing Federation of Serbia and Montenegro. In 2006 following a referendum held in Montenegro after which Serbia became an independent state the Rowing Federation of Serbia and Montenegro ended. Now all rowing is Serbia is governed by the Serbian Rowing Federation. Belgrade has hosted World Junior Rowing Championship 1978, World Under 23 Rowing Regatta 2003, Balkan Championship 2003, World University Rowing Championship 2008 and Balkan Championship 2008
